Title: Rain in the Bo-karoo
Medium: Oil on stretched canvas
Dimensions: 1500 mm x 1000 mm (unframed)
My imagery is inspired by the stark vastness of the southern Free State.
Every aspect of my live is influenced by the land. I draw my inspiration
from observing nature, always on the look for “magical moments”.
My work has been an ongoing exploration of what it feels like to be in
that space, surrounded by all that air and light, feeling the tug of the
horizon 360 degrees, the sense of limitlessness and blissful isolation.
It always begins with an awe-filled moment-an area with an intense
contrast of light, dramatic shadows or shapes-something that will sustain
my interest through the painting process.
The horizon and clouds are a magnet. I'm always drawn to the distant,
blue horizon and the succession of hills that create a tremendous sense
of vastness.
The creative process is about discovery. If you're not discovering
something in each attempt, the work is probably lifeless.

“It is not so much for its beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men's hearts,
as for that subtle something, that quality
of air that emanates from old
trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.
- Robert Louis Stevenson

Tigers are renowned the world around for their undeniable beauty, grace and form. There is nothing that truly prepares you for the majesty of an untamed tiger close up. Appreciating the beauty of the tiger not only deepens our appreciation of their magnificence, but also reveals much about their lives, habits and adaptations.

Artists Comment/Statement: "I went to the woods because I wished to live
deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not
learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had
not lived."
- Henry David Thoreau, Walden |

Artists Comment/Statement:
“Just think of the trees: they let the birds
perch and fly, with no intention to call them
when they come and no longing for their
return when they fly away. If people's
hearts can be like the trees, they will not
be off the Way."
- Langya |
Artists Comment/Statement:
"Oh to be free of myself,
With nothing left to remember,
To have my heart as bare as a tree in December;
Resting, as a tree rests
After its leaves are gone,
Waiting no more for a rain at night
Nor for the red at dawn."
- Sara Teasdale, The Tree |
