The jail was built in 1872 in
Philippolis, the oldest "nedersetting" (1823) in the Free State.
The Jail has for all practical purposes been left in as close
to original state as possible. Experience what a prisoner must have
felt like way back then, locked up in one of the cells. But of
course, we have added all the modern conveniences that we all have
become accustomed to. A stopover well worth going to jail for.
Accommodation:
Accommodation is individual "cells" 7' x 10' (2m x 3m) with 24'
(60cm) outer walls, and 18" (45cm) inner walls. (Cool in summer -
Warm in winter). Very heavy and sturdy wood and steel doors. (Cells
are virtually sound proof) Two single "Prison Beds" per cell plus
one floor mat.
Self-Catering:
Braai packs are available in season, as well as wood and charcoal.
Braai facilities are supplied. Kitchen with fridge and stove is at
the disposal of the "Prisoners", basic utensils are available but
you must bring your own supplies. Good cell phone reception in
"Jail".
